SoC What is and What it Does?¶
IP Camera/DVR/NVR's SoC, What's it? What it does?
A system on a Chip or SoC is the core processor in most of the IP cameras and NVRs, so it is safe to say that the SoC will determine the performance of the Network CCTV equipment.
Components of the SoC¶
There is a different component of the SoC, but it is faster if we mention what SoC integrates:
- ISP or Image signal processor.
- Video Codec Engine (Encoding)
- DSP or Digital signal processor
- Network peripheral interfaces
- Intelligent video analysis engine
- Etc
We can say that there are two main important components in a CCTV camera, those will be the CMOS sensor and the SoC, in order to evaluate a device it is important to know what type of SoC it is used.
The factors to determine the performance of the SoC are:
- Architecture of the SoC, dual-core, quad-core, speed
- ISP Capability including WDR, HDR, DOL. etc
- Encoding/Decoding capability
- Maximum resolution and frame rate
- Network and other I/O peripheral interfaces
If we know the SoC we will be able to compare different cameras that share similar features.
The most popular manufactures are:
- Ambrella
- Hisilicon
- Texas Instruments
Hikvision and Dahua use Ambarella and Hisilicon
Uniview and Tiandy use Hisilicon
in 2020 due to the NDAA some manufacture move away from SoC produce in China such as Hisilicon.
